Be it as Kavya Shashtri, Mahi or Muskaan, her simple charming smile had always touched the hearts of the audiences, brought respect to the characters, while keeping the innocence alive. With not many roles in her kitty these days, Minissha Lamba is busy with her personal life, reading and participating more in social debates. The actress, who was in town to perform at an event, talks to TOI about choosing Bollywood over a career in journalism and the controversial apex court verdict regarding homosexuality.Asked whether she regretted becoming an actor when she was gearing up to become a scribe, Minissha said, “It’s true that I was aspiring for a career in journalism, but I actually thank god that I ended up in Bollywood instead.
I realized that it was actually what I wanted to do in life. When my first film, 'Adaa', was due for release, I was still finding it difficult to believe that I had done something I wished to do as a teenager.”
As for her love for journalism, the actress said, “I would have loved to be a journalist if I had not been an actor or taken up modeling. Kavya Shashtri — the character I played in 'Shaurya' — is how I would have been in real life.” Though her favourite role was Mahi in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' — a light-hearted and bubbly girl — she said every woman needed respect from society.
Stating that women-centric movies would help change mindsets, Minissha said, “My performances in movies are categorized good and would be remembered even after 10 years, but I would love to do act in woman-centric movies.
Waise bhi, abhi bahut kuch karna baki hai.”The actress has also been lending her voice to the national debate spurred by the Supreme Court verdict on Section 377 that re-criminalized homosexuality or ‘unnatural sexual acts’. Minissha said the verdict was unfortunate, as it had pushed India back at a time when other countries in the world were trying to decide whether homosexual partners should be allowed to marry or not.
